Yours is the age-old question. "How could they not know?" Ditto The Wiz (just using this season's shows as an example). All the out-of-town reviews said "This is not ready," and yet, this half-baked entity is on Broadway. (Actually, perhaps this one isn't apples to apples as maybe the train was out of the station with The Wiz because they already had a theater booked, whereas Lempicka could, presumably, have waited until the elements were better in place). I think I chalk it up to the idea that creators can get too close to be objective. My guess is that the creators of both shows THOUGHT that they understood and addressed what wasn't working but, in fact, they are not seeing what we see and the changes that were made were too superficial to help. As Chita Rivera famously said, "We are not doing this on purpose." They brought in a show that they thought was ready.
