Lempicka - A Question For Any One Understands Browaday

I am new to this forum, and a novice when it comes to Broadway (I see every touring performance that passes through my one-horse town).

Like many here, I have waited eagerly for Lempicka to open. I am smitten with Eden Espinosa.

Not only are Lempicka's many reviews almost universally poor, they all point to the same faults (the book, the character development, etc). AND these were the same critical complaints when the show was in development over the last several years.

Someone (who may know) please describe how a show with so many known "issues" made it to Broadway in the first place. I understand that shows may fail for being too "avant-garde" or are ambitious and have "mixed" reviews in development. Lempicka has been disliked by critics for years for all of the same reasons and it made its way to the Longacre Theater anyway.
