When someone like Jerry Mitchell is seen at an out-of-town tryout, he's not necessarily deciding whether or not to "take the reins." He may be there as a favor to thr producers or creators and was merely asked to give some advice.

On SMILE, Michael Bennet and Tommy Tune came to Baltimore on successive nights and then met with Howard Ashman for several hours apiece. Neither was being asked to take over, just to give an outsider's opinion to the bookwriter/lyricist/director who was perhaps too close to the material by then to see the forest for the trees. Unfortunately, those two superstar directors had completely different opinions about what the show needed, and left Howard more confused than before they came.
