| In 1987, I saw the third performance of the pre-Broadway tryout of the revisal in which "Meeskite" was first cut. I was 29. I feel a bit weird saying this, but I was also pretty muscular. I only say that because you wrote, "non-physically threatening male." I thought cutting the song was a big mistake. No one would have thought of casting me as Schultz in 1987, nor would I have felt myself right for the role. I long ago stopped acting, and I have no thoughts or hopes of ever playing the role now that I am age-appropriate for it. Yes, it was a change that was made by the creators. We can still think it was a mistake. I hate the ham-fisted way in which Ernst now learns that Schultz is Jewish. I love the song. I feel it is very touching. It gives us some additional insight into the character, and I feel that the party scene needs a song other than the "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" reprise. In the 1980s Dramatists Guild Quarterly discussion of the creation of the show, the song is discussed. No one says that it only worked when Gilford did it, which was the reason later given by Kander, Ebb and Masteroff. Several reviews of the national tour single out Leo Fuchs's performance of the song as a highlight of the show. So it would seem to have worked with actors other than Gilford. And I think Peter Sallis's performance of the song on the original London cast recording is terrific. The creators kept the original version of the show available for production. So while they approved the cutting of the song, they also approved allowing the song to be done. I have no trouble with you or others (including the creators of the original version) feeling the song should be cut, but I do think the comment about some people here liking the song because they feel age-appropriate for the character is off-base. |
