I think I probably like Ato Blankson-Wood's performance more than most on this board. I've been a casual fan since his time in HAIR.

My read on his Cliff was that his character arc is similar to Stew in PASSING STRANGE - a black American who finds what he thinks is paradise and freedom in a hedonistic European environment only to decide it doesn't make him happy (for very different reasons though). With Ato Blanskon-Wood in the role, Cliff is a black bisexual man in the 1930s who has presumably lived his whole life in places where discrimination was legal, with Jim Crow laws in the US and anti-homosexuality laws in the UK. Even with all Berlin has to offer, he still holds back. While some may view this as being dull, I viewed it instead as being emotionally guarded.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but that's how I interpreted Ato Blankson-Wood's Cliff and with that, I enjoyed his performance.
