| The environmental message of URINETOWN will hit entirely differently in 2025 than it did in 2001. Its "Hail, Malthus!" ideas all seemed rather theoretical when I first saw the pre-Broadway production in Hell's Kitchen... Just last year, entire states had huge battles over who can use the water of the Colorado river (linked below). From 2015 to 2018, Cape Town was forced to ration water for human consumption and develop a disaster plan that's been a new blueprint for cities around the globe. Every time I see stories that reveal the ways that our way of life is literally unsustainable, it makes me want to send people to URINETOWN... not the place, of course, the musical... - GMB |
