There's a significant difference. Although the Tony Committee decided that CONTACT as a musical, it wasn't. It was a dance concert. Dance has a long history of being done to pre-recorded music. I believe AFM rightly let COMNTACR pass without a murmur. HERE LIES LOVE is a musical. You can use Pre-recorded tracks. But you're in a BRoadway Theatre, a signatory, as are the producers, of the Broadway League/AFM contract, which requires a minimum of 19 musicians at the Broadway. So does the St James. ILLINOISE got a concession to only employ 15 musicians. Just as HERE LIES LOVE was not required to hire 19 musicians. I'm working on London bound show that uses all tracks for similar reasons as HERE LIES LOVE. Our London GM looked into the situation, and we are required to also engage live musicians - either 7 or 8. The composer is fine with this, and is writing some sequences that can be played live. There are rules. You play by them. That said - no one forgot HERE LIES LOVE. No one liked it that much on Broadway - it seemed a bit of a damp squib compared to its run at the Public. And lest we forget, it was a flop. MERRILY began performances way back ion September. Everyone expects it to win best revival. No one forgot it.
