I think the distraction is valid. I really loved this show and was telling a friend about how much it spoke to me. He noted that a blocker for him was being confused as to why some of the Greasers were Black, and in the period the show is set that there would be no mention of racial tension. I think it's pretty clearly set up in the opening number, or maybe the second number, that the conflict is class based.

For me personally, I hardly noticed. I had never seen the film or read the book, but my thought process---which must have happened pretty quickly and almost subconsiously while watching the musical was something like "oh I bet all of these characters would likely be white based on the time and place and the story being told, so they've done some color blind casting". And that was it.
