What happened to Little Shop?

The excellent book of Little Shop is clever enough and funny enough that all a well cast actor has to do is play the truth. No embellishment needed and that's what made it work so wonderfully with its original (revival) cast. Well, the original, too. Now, somehow, actors are allowed to make "funny" voices and do "funny" walks and turn line readings into weird vocal plays that would even be too big for The Muppet Show. Jinkx Monsoon is, in my opinion, a fabulous performer with great instincts and comedy chops, but this isn't her show. Audrey now has no vulnerability. She could easily beat up Orin. While the presentational style of Chicago was a perfect match for her talents, this is not. She is hardly alone in the mugging, but since it all hinges on Audrey, her choices are the most consequential. I believe that Jinkx is capable of giving us a real Audrey, but the direction here appears to have been to go for the laugh-- something Ashman expressly told actors not to do in the published script.
