''My Fair Lady'': ''I don't dislike the musical. It works quite well overall, and I can see why it's beloved.''

I'm reminded of Franklin Shepard's lyric from ''Opening Doors'' in ''Merrily We Roll Along'': ''I saw 'My Fair Lady. ... I sort of enjoyed it.''

In his ''Finishing the Hat: Collected Lyrics,'' Sondheim says Lerner's lyrics are ''pleasant'' and ''tasteful,'' but lack ''passion'' and ''personality.''

Sondheim concludes that Lerner's work is ''so professional and uninteresting.'' However, he adds: ''I must report that I saw the second preview of 'My Fair Lady' in New Haven and the eventual product in New York, and it's the most entertaining musical I've ever seen (exclusive of my own, of course).''
