Bingo! I felt exactly the same.
This year I fell for some of this "show of the season, give me all your money" hype... I've stopped doing that. A
Note: Merrily uses good dynamic pricing and if you can wait til day of, you can often see it for a more normal price. :) I paid more at NYTW than I did on Broadway - just gotta keep checking.
Note: As for Cabaret, if you want to see it, the mezz will be just fine. No need to spend $250 or more for orch. I enjoyed it, but more like $100 worth...
